Impact of #PCOSweightloss: A Global X Hashtag Analysis Study of Weight Loss Narratives in the PCOS Community

A recent research article, “Impact of #PCOSweightloss: A global X hashtag analysis study of weight loss narratives in the PCOS community,” investigated the use of the hashtag #PCOSweightloss on the social media platform X for sharing experiences and information about the self-management of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. The research examined the posts from July 1, 2017, to July 1, 2023, using the Fedica analytics tool. There were 1,570 users in that period, having shared 12,200 posts which gathered almost 3 million views. The top geolocations where the posts were shared included the United States at 38.6%, India at 30.6%, and the United Kingdom at 10.6%. Some common related hashtags on the topic are #PCOS, #healthyfood, #pcosmood, and #diabetes. Physicians made 30% of the top-engaged ten posts and comprised 20% of the top-ten influencers involved in the discussion. Sentiment analysis was positive for 1%, negative for 1%, and neutral for 98% of posts. This study has highlighted how social media may play a relevant role in sharing information and in social support concerning PCOS weight management, pointing out the involvement of experts that guarantees the quality and truthfulness of the shared information.
